The plastic surgery community is unlike any other: tightly knit, spanning across several countries, and equip with its own super-secret vocabulary. If you are new to the community and are just beginning to get acquainted with the plastic surgery world, welcome! The plastic surgery community is known for being welcoming, judgement free and full of stories and advice.
Mia Aesthetics has taken the task of creating a “plastic surgery dictionary” for community newcomers to get them well-versed on the typical jargon they might see on social media. Below is a list of common plastic surgery terms to get you started and well-versed in the community:
#MiaBabe
A #MiaBabe is someone who has completely immersed themselves in the culture of Mia Aesthetics. The Mia Aesthetics culture is full of positivity, motivation and encouragement. Being a #MiaBabe doesn’t only apply to those who have chosen to have plastic surgery with us. #MiaBabes can also be the friends and family members who come to support their loved ones having plastic surgery, as well as our many social media followers and fans across the world.
BA
BA is the shorthand name we use when referring to a breast augmentation. A breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that involves placing synthetic implants into the chest to enhance the volume and appearance of breasts. The procedure, which is sought out by over 300,000 American women a year, is typically done to increase breast size or improve breast symmetry. It is one of the most popular procedures performed at Mia Aesthetics.
BBL
BBL is the shorthand name for our best seller, the Brazilian butt lift. The Brazilian butt lift (BBL), sculpts the buttocks and adds volume using the patient’s own fat from other areas of the body. No matter the patient’s age, genetics, or other factors, butt enhancement can lift, tighten, and improve the overall appearance of the buttocks. The BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift) procedure has recently become the fastest-growing cosmetic surgery in the nation, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
BMI
BMI, or body mass index, is a way to measure a person’s body composition. Although BMI is not a perfect analysis of a person’s weight class and overall health, is a convenient rule of thumb used to broadly categorize a person as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese based on tissue mass (muscle, fat, and bone) and height. Commonly accepted BMI ranges are underweight (under 18.5), normal weight (18.5 to 25), overweight (25 to 30), and obese (over 30). You can search “BMI Calculator” online to calculate your own BMI. Body mass index is important for plastic surgery because it is a good indicator of the overall health of the patient. Patients with a higher BMI have more risks during surgery than those with a BMI in the normal weight class. Some of these risks include anesthesia complications, heart attack, wound infection and nerve injury. Additionally, patients with a higher BMI may receive less than ideal results from their procedure. At Mia Aesthetics, body mass index for all surgeries except tummy tucks and combo procedures must be lower than 34 upon arrival for surgery. BMI for tummy tuck and combo procedures, like a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) and a breast augmentation, for example, must be 32 or less.
Damn Gina
Damn Gina is a term used almost exclusively at Mia Aesthetics. It was coined by our CEO, and is one of the signature booties he gives his BBL patients. In short, Damn Gina is the biggest, baddest booty you can get here at Mia Aesthetics!
Faja
Faja is the Latin term for compression garment. A faja is a garment used for postoperative wear by recovering BBL and liposuction patients to keep swelling to a minimum and ensure that the skin tightens properly. While they can be uncomfortable, fajas help you heal and help contour your body to the perfect shape.
Fluff Fairy
For plastic surgery patients, especially those undergoing a BBL, the fluff fairy is a term that gets thrown around often. The fluff fairy is a mythical creature that comes in to give you the SNATCHED body you’ve been dreaming of. There is a period of time after you’ve undergone a BBL that you can expect your skin to stretch out to accommodate the newly inserted fat that’s been harvested there. This is the fat that has been taken from one or more donor areas, including the stomach, hips back or thighs. When the fat is initially inserted into the buttocks, your skin will feel very tight and have a sort of burning sensation because it is now learning to accommodate fat that was not there before. The skin eventually stretches out to accommodate the newly inserted fat and “fluffs” out. Although there is not an exact time period to expect skin to begin stretching out or “fluffing” due to the unique anatomy of each patient, a rough estimate of when to expect this phenomenon to occur is about six to eight weeks after your procedure. However, patients should expect that their “fluffing” stage will not be identical to every other patient’s.
MMO
MMO is the shorthand word we use for mommy makeover. The mommy makeover addresses body and skin concerns that often occur in women who have carried one or more babies. After having children, many women experience undesirable body changes such as weight gain, skin stretching and breast sagging. The mommy makeover is tailored to each patient to address their unique needs, targeting body changes on the breasts, stomach area, back, hips and buttocks, and even on the face. Whatever your specific concerns are, there is a unique mommy makeover plan that can be developed just for you.
OR
OR is the shorthand word for operating room, AKA where all the magic happens at Mia Aesthetics!
Shelf and Slope
Shelf and slope are two terms used to describe possible booties that can be obtained from a BBL. A shelf booty features dramatic projection that causes the booty to look like a shelf that a glass of water can be balanced on. A slope booty features a more gradual curve, and is typically more natural looking. The type of booty you can get depends largely on your anatomy, but your surgeon can always work with you to help you achieve your desired results.
Slay
Slay is a verb used to describe a #MiaBabe who is serving looks, confidence and overall charisma. When you come to Mia Aesthetics wearing your best outfit, ready to achieve the body of your dreams, you are slaying!
Snatched
Snatched is the term we use for a really tight, small waist. Our surgeons use liposuction and BBLs to achieve this type of waist on patients. This look can be achieved through body contouring, a combination of fat removal and re-insertion to create a perfect hourglass look.
SX Sister
A SX Sister is someone who is having plastic surgery around the same time as you, and becomes a support system throughout your body transformation. Whether you meet her in the lobby, at your recovery house or on social media, a SX Sister becomes a true friend and shoulder to lean on during your surgery and throughout your recovery period. A SX Sister is for life!
Trust the Process
“Trust the process” is a phrase that is very hard to understand during recovery, but it is very important to achieving an overall positive surgical experience. During surgery recovery, your body goes through a series of stages that may be uncomfortable. Swelling, aching and bruising are all common. During these uncomfortable stages, many women begin to regret their decision and wonder if things will get better. This is where “trust the process” comes in. Like all processes, healing from surgery takes time. If you let your body do what it is designed to do and follow all your post-op instructions, you will be on your way to achieving the body of your dreams in no time.
TT
TT is the shorthand word for tummy tuck. A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a popular procedure that removes excess fat and skin from the abdominal area, and for many patients, tightens and restores the stomach muscles to their former shape and positioning.
Tummy on Flat Flat
A tummy on flat flat is the super tight, super snatched tummy all of our patients want to achieve. During liposuction and a BBL, the patient’s body is expertly contoured, putting fat in all the right places and creating the perfect flat tummy and full booty.
