Implant Types Available – Which Feel Most Natural?

When considering breast augmentation at Mia Aesthetics, patients have several options. Each approach has its unique benefits and considerations. Here’s a quick comparison to help you understand the differences and determine which option might be best for you.

Fat Augmentation

Fat augmentation, also known as autologous fat transfer or fat grafting, involves using the patient’s own fat to enhance the breasts. Fat is harvested from areas of the body with excess via liposuction. This often includes but is not limited to fat from the abdomen, thighs, or flanks. The fat is then purified and injected into the breasts to increase volume and improve shape.

This is the most natural option because it uses your own fat. Your breasts will look and feel real because they will be. The procedure also offers the dual benefit of liposuction, which will improve your body shape and contour in your breasts as well as other areas. Fat augmentation offers only a modest increase in breast size, however.

Silicone Implants

After fat augmentation, silicone implants provide the next most natural look and feel. And these aren’t your grandmother’s silicone implants, so there is no need to worry about safety. Today’s implants are made of a silicone gel that stays in place in the rare event of an implant rupture. This cohesive gel is safer and minimizes the risk of implant rippling and other visible imperfections.

Saline Implants

Saline implants are silicone shells filled with sterile salt water. They are inserted empty and filled once they are in place, allowing for a smaller incision than silicone. They also offer the most size flexibility as the surgeon has control over how much he fills them.

Some people feel that saline implants are more likely to ripple and feel less natural compared to silicone. They can feel firmer than natural breast tissue and silicone implants. When implanted by a skilled surgeon, however, saline implants can look great.

How the Breast Augmentation Surgery Works

There are slight differences in the surgical procedures used to perform different implant surgeries, but the general process is as follows:

  • Your care team will prepare you for surgery and place you under general anesthesia.
  • If you are having a fat transfer augmentation, we will perform liposuction on the areas discussed prior to surgery and save the fat.
  • The surgeon will make their incision and create the pocket in which your implant will sit.
  • Your new implants will be inserted and positioned. If you’ve opted for a fat transfer, the fat will be carefully and artfully injected to enhance your breast size and shape.
  • Saline implants will be filled at this time if applicable.
  • Any incisions will be closed and bandages placed as necessary.
  • Your care team will monitor you as you come out of anesthesia.
  • When you have adequately recovered, we will provide and explain your post-op instructions and send you home.

Recovery Process – How Long Will You Be Out of Work?

After a breast augmentation, most patients can return to sedentary jobs in about 10 to 14 days. Those who have a fat transfer augmentation can sometimes go back after seven days. More strenuous activities, including lifting your arms above your head, will have to wait four to six weeks, however, no matter what type of breast augmentation procedure you choose.

You will need to wear a surgical or supportive bra for at least four weeks after surgery. If you opted for a fat transfer procedure, you will also have to wear a compression garment on the areas where you had liposuction. You may need this garment for as long as six to eight weeks.

Your surgeon will give you prescription medication to help you manage any discomfort during the first few days after surgery. If you take this medication as prescribed, you should feel only minimal discomfort. This will ease in about a week.
