It’s important to remember that lip lift recovery takes several weeks. You’ll be feeling like yourself again just a few days after the procedure, but it’s essential that you keep following your plastic surgeon’s post-op instructions at this time. Most patients can resume light activity three to seven days after their procedure, but your body won’t yet be fully healed.
The quality of the care you give yourself at home can significantly impact your lip shape, symmetry, and scar visibility. Poor overall care can delay healing, as can smoking and nicotine. The chemicals found in tobacco smoke kill red blood cells, which are vital to recuperating. In addition, scarring is often worse in patients who smoke and/or expose their incisions to sunlight.
If you have diabetes, poor circulation, or other medical conditions, you may heal more slowly. If you suffer from such a condition, following your surgeon’s postoperative directions is even more important.
The immediate recovery phase spans the first three days after your lip lift. Your main job during this time is to rest, and you may feel quite groggy if you opted for general anesthesia rather than local. You may be sent home with a small dressing or steri-strip over your incision. Tightness, swelling, mild bruising, and upper lip numbness are common during this time, and all are temporary.
You should be starting to feel better now and require only over-the-counter pain management, if any, after day five. If you have a desk job, you may return to it as early as day three, but it’s not unusual for patients to wait seven days.
Now is when you start to see things noticeably improve. There may still be swelling, bruising, and redness in the lip area, but you’ll look a bit better every week. Most people start to feel comfortable at social gatherings during this phase of healing, even though some makeup may be needed if you want to hide any residual bruising.
This is when things get back to normal. You can resume your normal daily routine at this point, and the results of your lip lift will start to show. They haven’t completely settled in just yet, but you’ll see a marked improvement in your lips.
Your scar may still have some fading to do, but by the six-month mark, the results are in. When you look in the mirror now, what you see is what you get. Your new lip shape and balance have settled in, and it’s time to enjoy your results.
We like keeping things as simple as we can for our patients, especially after surgery when they may not be feeling their very best. To that end, we’ve compiled this simple list of do’s and don’ts that you can refer to during your lip lift recovery. They’re simple and straightforward, because we know that sometimes you need the details, and other times you just need to know what to do.
The overwhelming majority of patients undergo a completely drama-free lip lift recovery. Complications can arise, however. They are rare but not impossible. Contact your plastic surgeon right away if you experience the following so they can make sure you’re not having an issue:
You can gently smile about a week after your liplift, but leave the big grins and exaggerated expressions alone for two or three weeks. The goal is to avoid tension on your incision site until it is fully closed and healed.
While it certainly doesn’t feel like being kissed by puppies, most patients describe a tight sensation after their procedure rather than pain. Many do just fine controlling discomfort with over-the-counter medications, but your plastic surgeon can prescribe stronger medication if necessary.
You must wait until your incision is completely closed and your plastic surgeon gives you the nod before wearing makeup. This usually takes about seven to 14 days. You can apply makeup elsewhere, so long as it doesn’t touch or cover your incision. Eye makeup, blush, and other items are fine after surgery.
Scars naturally begin to blend in with the skin around them in three to six months. They can take a year to mature and fade, however. Regular silicone care and daily sun protection are key to achieving minimal visibility.
