Unfortunately, there is no way to get rid of a bulbous nose naturally. Surgery is the only fix. Many people successfully hide a bulbous nose, however, using makeup and contouring techniques. But doing so requires daily makeup application. This is a good option if you don’t want surgery, but it can quickly become tedious.
Although the goal may be to make the tip of the nose smaller, a bulbous nose job is ultimately just a common rhinoplasty. This specific condition often involves a combination of thick skin, extra nasal tip cartilage, and excess fatty tissue. All of these issues can contribute to the bulbous appearance. The goal of the surgery is to create a more defined and aesthetically pleasing nose tip while maintaining or improving nasal function. Here’s how the procedure typically works:
A bulbous nose job is helpful because it provides permanent and immediate results. It can take up to a year for all of the swelling to completely ease and for your nose to fully settle into its new position. You will notice a marked improvement in the shape of your nose immediately, however. So long as you don’t injure your nose after your rhinoplasty, the results of your bulbous nose job will be permanent.
Ideal candidates for a bulbous nose job are nonsmokers in generally good health who are unhappy with the shape of their nose. It’s important that you don’t smoke as this can greatly impede the healing process and cause complications. So can chronic conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes, so it’s important that these conditions be well controlled.
Rhinoplasty also requires that your nasal structure be mature. You must be at least 18 and done growing before you have rhinoplasty. You must also have realistic expectations for the procedure. A bulbous nose rhinoplasty is intended to improve the shape of your nose and can provide dramatic results. It may not, however, give you a perfect nose.
Rhinoplasty is considered a safe, low-risk procedure, but it is moderately invasive. Although small, you will have open incisions and your surgeon will be making marked changes to your anatomy. The procedure will cause significant swelling and bruising. Rhinoplasty is also a technically complex surgery, where small changes make a big difference. This reduces the margin of error. This is why it’s important to choose a skilled and experienced surgeon like those at Mia Aesthetics.
Immediately after your nose job you will experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the nose and around the eyes. We will give you prescription medication for pain management to keep you comfortable. It is common for your nose to be splinted and bandaged when you awake from surgery. Your surgeon will remove these dressings at a future appointment, usually about a week after surgery, at which time they will reveal your new nose. It may not look exactly as you planned, but that is because it will still be swollen.
You will need to rest after surgery with your head elevated above your chest. Most people need to take a week off of work but are feeling like themselves again at that time. More strenuous activities will have to wait at least three weeks and perhaps longer. You will likely need multiple follow-up visits to monitor the healing process, remove sutures if needed, and address any concerns.
Although subtle, slight swelling can impact the appearance of your new nose for up to a year after surgery. You will notice improvements right away, but give your body adequate time to adjust before judging your results.
