Brazilian Butt Lift performed by mia aesthetics in Miami Beach, FLSome say the craze began with Jennifer Lopez.  Others credit Beyonce or Kim Kardashian. But all these modern-day beauty icons can be credited with popularizing large, perky, shapely butts.  Yes, the “big booty” is “in” and in a big way.

Now that derrieres are no longer something to “work off” or hide, many women want more than they’ve got.  Exercise can help shape and lift the buttocks, but a lot of women cannot get the look they want by squats alone.

So what can you do if you want a larger, rounder butt but can’t get it on your own? Enter the Brazilian butt lift. In a few short years, this surgical butt augmentation procedure has become the fastest-growing cosmetic surgery in the nation, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.  And in a shape-conscious year-round beach city like Miami, shapely derrieres are de rigueur. However, it is not just Miami now, this cosmetic surgery is popular among the women of many other states of America, be it Brazilian butt lift Chicago or Brazilian lift Houston.

The Brazilian Butt Lift sculpts the buttocks and adds volume using the patient’s own fat from other areas of the body.  No matter the patient’s age, genetics, or other factors, butt enhancement can lift, tighten, and improve the overall appearance of the buttocks.

Besides creating fuller, more shapely buttocks, the procedure has an added benefit: removing unwanted fat from areas like the tummy. So the lift ends up contouring several areas of the body and improving the overall silhouette. And finally, the procedure is considered minimally invasive.

Ideal Candidates

Good candidates for the Brazilian butt lift procedure are healthy adults who want to improve the size, shape, contour, and/or lift of the buttocks. Candidates should have enough fat to use in the transfer process and have realistic expectations about the results from the procedure. With this criteria in place, the Brazilian butt lift is minimally invasive and effective.

The Brazilian butt lift is usually performed as outpatient surgery under IV sedation or general anesthesia. The first step is the extraction of the fat from one or more donor areas. These areas may include the stomach, hips, or thighs, and will depend on the amount of fat needed, as well as the distribution of fat throughout the body. Liposuction is performed through small incisions, and the doctor will remove excess fat from the donor areas to ensure there is enough high-quality material for grafting.

Once the fat is retrieved, it gets washed, spun, and purified to isolate the most viable cells for transfer. About 25% of cells will be healthy enough to reuse. The prepared fat is then injected into the buttock area, carefully shaping, lifting and augmenting the area according to the patient’s wishes. Some of the injected fat will become permanently established in the treated area to ensure lasting results.

Because treatment centers on a high-movement area, recovery means significant activity restrictions.  Patients should plan to take up to 2 weeks off from work, potentially more if their works involves a lot of sitting. Patients should wear compression garments for 3-6 months following the procedure.

Post-surgical pain and discomfort is controlled with prescribed medication, and patients should plan to take it easy and recover at their own pace. Final results become apparent at about 6 months to a year, after the swelling subsides and the fat has had time to establish itself in the buttock area.

Choosing the Right Surgeon

After deciding to undergo a Brazilian butt lift, your next most important decision will be who will operate on you.  Sculpting the buttocks takes a knowledgeable surgeon with artistry, and it’s important to choose a plastic surgeon who has produced results you admire. Aside from technical skill, it is extremely important to choose a doctor you can trust—a surgeon who will listen to you and help you get the custom results you want.

As Medical Director of mia Aesthetics, Dr. Sergio Alvarez personally operates on our patients and also has the deep knowledge to identify and recruit only the best plastic surgeons to the clinic who share Dr. Alvarez’s philosophy:  Beauty is personal and everyone should have access to the high-quality, truly personalized care.

Are the results from Brazilian butt lift permanent?

While not all of the injected fat from the procedure will survive to augment the buttocks, the idea behind the Brazilian butt lift is that the majority of the grafts will establish themselves permanently. At about the six-month mark, patients will be able to see how much of the fat is permanent.  The fat cells that don’t survive are absorbed by the body by then. To compensate for the inevitable loss of some fat, surgeons sometimes overfill the area during surgery.

What if I lose or gain weight during recovery?

Results can be compromised if the patient gains or loses weight, so we advise patients to maintain a stable weight while their body is healing.

What are the risks involved with the procedure?

There are risks in any surgical procedure, and the Brazilian butt lift is no exception, but serious complications are rare. Here are some of the potential complications:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Numbness
  • Stretch marks
  • Excessive resorption of grafted fat
  • Asymmetry

Risks can be minimized at the outset by choosing the right surgeon. Then following all surgeon instructions as closely as possible will further minimize complications during and after Brazilian butt lift surgery.

If I don’t have enough body fat for grafting, are there other butt enhancement options?

While fat transfer is the preferred method for buttock augmentation, some patients don’t have enough fat in other areas to generate the necessary volume. In these cases, some surgeons will use silicone implants instead of fat, but this is far less common and less natural-looking. Only talking to an expert will give you the customized answers you need.

Will any scars show at the beach following the surgery?

Brazilian butt lift procedures should only produce small scars which fade over time and are hidden by clothing most of the time. However, all surgery produces some scarring and people scar differently, so you should discuss the risk of scarring with your doctor before moving forward with the procedure. Prospective surgeons will be able to advise you on the expected location and size of the scars.

Will I have to avoid sitting after surgery?

Yes you will.  Sitting becomes a no-no for a while after a Brazilian butt lift. It’s inconvenient but critical for good results. Most surgeons recommend you avoid sitting directly on the buttocks for 3-4 weeks.  This avoids fat-shifting, which compromises results.  If you need advice on how to handle this recovery requirement in your home & work life, discuss it with your mia Aesthetics surgeon during your consultation.
