Getting a massage feels like an indulgence…a treat on par with getting a mani/pedi or a facial. But after plastic surgery, a post surgical massage takes on a hugely important role in your health, speeding recovery, reducing pain and eliminating inflammation.
Plastic surgery exposes the body to physical abuse in the joints, muscles and tissues, and massage plays an important role as a supplement to standard rehabilitation procedures after surgery. It is now recognized as a respectable part of a multimodal healing approach.
Thousands of liposuction, tummy tuck, blepharoplasty & other plastic treatments take place across the United States every single day, and because it’s become so routine, many people forget that a surgery of this magnitude mandates great care.
mia Aesthetics has the best massage therapy experts in Miami to help your body recover completely and as quickly as possible so your body can look beautiful.
Your consultation to discuss post surgical massage should be part of your discussion about having plastic surgery in the first place. Your mia Aesthetics surgeon will not only evaluate your health and candidacy for plastic surgery, but also discuss the recovery process with you. Your consultation is your opportunity to ask about if and how massage could play a role in your recovery. A good recovery is a huge part of a successful surgery with optimal results, so it’s never too early to discuss post-op massage therapy.
Candidates for post-surgical massage can be patients who’ve had virtually any kind of surgery, because surgery is trauma on the body and anyone’s body can benefit from the stimulus and varied hearing benefits it’ll bring. In the cosmetic surgery field, procedures that benefit enormously from recovery with post-op surgery include liposuction, tummy tuck, blepharoplasty, thigh & arm lift, and any kind of breast surgery.
Post Operative Massage Therapies include ultrasound, massage and lymphatic drainage.
These post-op therapies generally:
- Reduce pain and inflammation.
- Improve healing and prevent subcutaneous fibrosis liposuction.
- Prevent capsular contracture in breast augmentation.
- Accelerate the disappearance of bruising.
- Assist the body in pumping more oxygen & nutrients to tissues & vital organs
- Accelerate the surgical recovery process
- Aids in improving joint movement and flexibility
- Support the immune system as it acts directly on the central nervous system by releasing endorphins, substances that generate relaxation and pain relief.
Is post operative massage ever appropriate for people who haven’t had surgery?
As a matter of fact, yes. Even when there’s no injury, massage can helps athletes of all levels improve their flexibility and muscle suppleness. Our professional massage therapists can also stretch the muscles in trouble areas, promoting increased flexibility when the body is warm and more elastic.
Are there conditions that would prohibit me from getting post surgical massage?
Lymphatic drainage cannot be used on patients who suffer from low blood pressure, acute infections, phlebitis, thrombosis, cardiac failure, bronchial asthma, hyperthyroidism, carotid sinus syndrome and people suffering from malignant tumors. Your doctor at mia Aesthetics will conduct a full health screening at your surgery consultation to ensure both surgery and post-op treatments are safe for you.
How soon after surgery can I have my post-op massage?
It depends on both the patient and the procedure they had. An Abdominoplasty patient has to wait at least 3-4 days before beginning post-op therapy, in stages. With Breast Augmentation or Mammoplasty, can begin massage therapy from 2 days to 3 days after surgery as long as your mia Aesthetics plastic surgeon gives the go-ahead. Some patients must wait one to two weeks before they are well enough to begin therapeutic massage. Starting therapy too soon or too aggressively could create new problems. This is why your mia Aesthetics surgeon will keep an eye on your progress before giving you the green light to begin this part of your rehabilitation.
How many massage sessions will I need?
Your mia Aesthetics doctor will give you an estimate tailored to your body and procedure, but a dozen sessions is not out of the question.
How can massage make me heal faster?
Because of improved blood flow, massage therapy enhances nutrient delivery in the body, shortening surgical healing time. Increasingly, studies show that massage therapy shortens hospital stays. The reduced hospitalization is partially because less drug administration and postoperative interventions may be required.
Can massage do anything about scarring?
Massage helps breaking up scar tissue and prevents the creation of more (excessive) scar tissue formation. This goes for internal scar tissue (adhesions) as well as scars on the outside of the skin.
