Dimples are cute in a smile. Absolutely not cute anywhere else on your body. Those “skin dimples” known as cellulite occur when pockets of fat push up against connective tissue underneath the skin, making the skin appear lumpy. And sure, cellulite isn’t harmful, but it sure doesn’t help anyone’s self-esteem.
Statistics indicate more than 80% of American women will develop cellulite after the age of 20 at some point in life. And it happens to women of all sizes, on various parts of the body, and rigorous exercise won’t necessarily make it go away.
At mia Aesthetics, we boast an arsenal of modern tools in the fight against cellulite. From ultrasonic cavitation to radio frequency skin tightening, VaserSmooth, SmoothShapes and Cellulaze, we have the best technology, invasive and non-invasive, designed to make your skin smooth and sleek again.
Ultrasonic Cavitation Treatment
Ultrasonic Cavitation utilizes ultrasonic technology to transform fat cells into liquid, which then drains naturally through the body’s filtration system. This non-invasive procedure smooths out the skin very quickly without incisions or anesthesia.
Radio Frequency Skin Tightening
Radio frequency skin tightening (RF) is an aesthetic technique that uses RF energy to heat tissue and stimulate subdermal collagen production to reduce the appearance of fine lines and loose skin. The technique induces tissue remodeling and production of new collagen and elastin.
The SmoothShapes system uses proprietary technology called Photomology to combat cellulite using dynamic laser and light energy that liquefies fat in enlarged cells and repairs brittle collagen. Collagen gets regenerated, circulation improves and metabolic processes are restored. Contoured rollers and vacuum massage assist in moving the liquefied fat out through the lymphatic system and smooth the skin’s appearance.
Minimally invasive VASERsmooth uses the ultrasound technologies to treat cellulite by attacking the root problems that cause cellulite, using ultrasonic energy or high-energy sound waves to emulsify fat and remove signs of cellulite with a small, pen-shaped device to poke beneath the skin’s surface to break up the fatty tissue that creates cellulite.
Cellulaze is a minimally invasive laser procedure designed to attack the structure of cellulite beneath your skin. It delivers longer-lasting results after only one short treatment and may improve the thickness and elasticity of the skin. Results continue to improve three to twelve months after the procedure.
At your free consultation, our mia Aesthetics doctor will evaluate your cellulite zones and skin quality to see which treatment may be most effective for you. Problem areas can include:
Your doctor will advise you to drink lots of water, about eight cups a day, before and after the cellulite procedure to achieve optimal results. Fat elimination can actually be accomplished faster when the patient drinks plenty of water.
The doctor will answer any questions you have about your chosen procedure and may recommend you avoid alcohol as well as greasy, deep-fried or spicy foods for at least three days before the cellulite treatment.
The ideal candidate for any cellulite-fighting treatment is a healthy person who eats well, exercises moderately, but has stubborn cellulite that causes them embarrassment and affects their confidence and sense of self-esteem.
It all starts with ultrasound waves that produce a bubble in the fat cell tissue. This bubble starts quickly expanding and compressing, which creates high temperatures and a collapse that destroys fat cells and cellulite, reducing them to liquid. The membranes of these cells are eliminated through the urinary system once they’re broken.
It’s advisable to prepare for your ultrasound cavitation treatment by drinking plenty of fluids and consuming a low calorie diet beforehand. Fluid helps eliminate fat from the body. One treatment can last 30 to 45 minutes, with the focus on one part of the body. Optimal results emerge after six to ten sessions.
Radio Frequency Skin Tightening
RF is especially effective at treating extra sags and folds that occur after losing weight too quickly. This is great for body contouring, reducing cellulite and burning fat. This non-invasive solution requires no downtime and produces lasting results. Typically, treatment requires a series of 8-12 treatment sessions lasting 30–45 minutes. Devices have different penetration depths depending on the number of electrodes (monopolar, bipolar, or unipolar).
SmoothShapes combines lasers, massage and vacuuming to produce smooth skin with improved tone and texture, with skin feeling tighter. It is a safe, comfortable procedure typically consisting of eight sessions, twice a week for four weeks. Each session takes approximately 20 minutes per area being treated. Although considered painless, some women may experience bruising or soreness from the deep massage.
In order to get under the layer of skin and emulsify the fat in the targeted area, a few tiny incisions are made for a thin cannula to pass through. Before ultrasound energy is applied, a solution of water, numbing medication and adrenalin is permeated. The Vasersmooth allows for great precision so the doctor can targeted the problem areas while avoid harming surrounding tissue, nerves and blood vessels. The ultrasound energy reaches the layer under the patient’s skin, liquifying the fat and triggering collagen growth, thus reducing or even eliminating dimpling and loose skin appearance.
The whole procedure is relatively brief (depending on the extent of the problem), lasting for about 1-2 hours, and is usually performed under local anesthesia. Afterwards, the treated area gets bandaged and the patient needs a couple of days to recuperate and for the incisions to heal. You must wear a special garment on the treated area for 2-3 weeks.
A very small cannula (or tube about the size of the tip of a pen) is inserted under the skin to deliver energy directly to the problem area. This increases the thickness and quality of your skin, while simultaneously releasing the fibrous bands that pull it down—minimizing the orange peel look associated with cellulite. Finally, the cellulite laser diminishes the lumpy pockets of fat that protrude though the fibrous bands under your skin. Because the area is numbed with local anesthesia, you might feel nothing more than minimal discomfort or the mild sensation of light pressure. Following a Cellulaze cellulite laser treatment, you may experience aching similar to a post-workout. The procedure takes one to two hours, depending on the size of the area(s) getting treated. You’ll need to give yourself a day or two to rest and recover and may have to wear a compression garment for a short amount of time.
Water! Drinking water is actually considered helpful in flushing fat out of your system, so drink up. This is your time to get in those 8 glasses a day.
Each process also comes with its own recovery process as listed above and will also be detailed in your consultation with your mia Aesthetics doctor.
Choosing the Right Surgeon
While every technique we offer is safe, the efficacy of the treatment and care in the execution will have a direct effect on your results. In other words, it’s not just the procedure that counts, but the person executing it. Radio Frequency, for example, may result in dents on the skin surface due to uneven healing responses on the skin if improperly applied. This is why we encourage you to consider only highly-qualified, board-certified, experienced cosmetic surgeons. We encourage you to do your research, and be prepared with questions when you meet with an mia Aesthetics surgeon for a free consultation.
How do I know if the treatment Cellulaze is right for me?
Cellulaze delivers best results for women who are not significantly overweight but have mild to moderate cellulite on their thighs. Our physician will be able to counsel you fully after examining you on what treatment is optimal for your physique.
Do I need to lose weight before undergoing cellulite treatment?
Weight loss helps reduce cellulite in general. Losing a few pounds before your procedure may help improve the results of and reduce the number of treatment sessions.
Can I get cellulite treatment on multiple areas?
Most patients choose to get treatment on more than one area at the same time. The buttocks and thighs, for example, are a popular combination.
What happens if I gain weight after my treatment?
Weight gain will generally interfere with cellulite treatment results because gaining weight means extra fat cells, the main cause of cellulite. It is best to maintain your weight after treatment.
Does this mean I should wait after having kids to get cellulite treatment?
Pregnancy has not been known to affect the results as long as you maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine throughout.
Is cellulite a modern phenomenon?
No! 16th century artists depicted cellulite in many of their nude paintings of beautiful women—which may indicate that cellulite was not perceived as negative a cosmetic flaw as it is now. One sociologist claims cellulite was considered a normal part of the female body until it was reinvented as a toxic condition by Vogue magazine in 1973! But times, fashions and beauty standards all change!
